At SLAS, our Learning Support team strives to provide a learning environment tailored to each student’s needs. Therefore, in Primary, we have a Resource class that provides individualized instruction for reading and writing. The students learn from the Journeys curriculum in a way that is tailored to their strengths and challenges their areas for growth. Many of the activities and learning mechanisms are engaging and interactive to support social-emotional, gross motor, and fine motor skills as needed.
Grade 1 students are focused on the practice of comparing and contrasting “Now & Then”, which is also a skill tied to their Social Studies lesson from last week. Grade 2 students are reviewing how to think through the texts using “Cause & Effect” and context clues. Within about two school months left, it is amazing to see how students have made smooth progress on comprehending some complex texts in a better way, and their motivation to push themselves up for next level of learning.
Remembering the first day they walked in ELA Resource classroom, either they had tears in eyes or repeatedly saying “I can’t”/”I don’t know how…”; today, they initially use their Growth-Mindset to solve a challenge they run into, and are ready to grasp new knowledge and skills; are able manage themselves using self/co-regulation strategies to complete daily tasks as each day goes.”
